Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a condition of the eyes that causes the nerve of the eye to deteriorate over a period of time without causing any pain or discomfort.

The condition sometimes runs in families and is usually associated with elevated pressure in the eyeballs, but not always. In many cases, the condition is discovered by eye doctors during the routine examination for eyeglasses or other eye complaints.

TREATMENT

The first line of treatment for glaucoma is the use of eye drops to lower the pressure in the eye or to increase blood circulation to the nerve of the eye.

In some cases, when eye drops alone is not adequate to control the condition, laser surgery or traditional eye surgery is used.

SELECTIVE LASER TRABECULUPLASTY (SLT)

SLT is a new laser procedure performed in the office by a special laser that is developed exclusively for treating Glaucoma.

The treatment is painless and takes less than ten minutes to perform, but it is usually able to lower the pressure in the eye so that many patients can reduce the number of eye drops they are taking, or is some cases they can eliminate the need for an eye drop. The SLT procedure does not cause significant tissue damage so it can be repeated if the effect is reduced later on.
